Material Weight Calculator

Weight from size, or length from weight, for MS, stainless steel, brass, copper, aluminium, PTFE or any material by specific gravity.

Material Densities

Typical densities used by the calculator. Actual values vary slightly with alloy and grade.

MaterialDensity g/cm³
Mild Steel (MS)7.85
Stainless Steel SS 3047.93
Stainless Steel SS 3167.98
Brass8.50
Copper8.96
Aluminium2.70
PTFE (Teflon)2.20

Cross-Section Formulas

Weight (kg) = Area (mm²) × Length (mm) × Density (g/cm³) ÷ 1,000,000

Good to Know

How accurate is the weight?

The calculation is exact for the nominal size. Real bar stock is supplied within tolerance, so actual weight usually varies by a few percent. Rolled angles, channels, T bars and beams have rounded root corners the formula ignores, so they typically weigh 1–4% more than calculated.

What is specific gravity?

Specific gravity is a material's density relative to water. Numerically it equals the density in g/cm³, so for a material with SG 1.41 (such as acetal/POM), enter 1.41 under "Other material".

Can I calculate the length from a weight?

Yes. Choose "Length from weight", enter the total weight and the number of pieces, and the calculator gives the length per piece and the total length.

Can I share a calculation?

Yes. The page address updates as you type, so you can bookmark or send it. "Copy result" copies a one-line summary with the link, and "Get a quote on WhatsApp" sends the details straight to us.
