Precision Profile Cutting
Precision profile cutting produces flat components with tight outline tolerances, typically ±0.01–0.1 mm, using fine laser cutting, waterjet or wire EDM depending on the accuracy needed. It suits parts where the profile itself is functional, such as gears, cams, templates and tool parts.
What it is
The cutting method is matched to the accuracy: fiber laser for fine sheet parts, abrasive waterjet for thicker or heat-sensitive materials, and wire EDM when microns and sharp corners matter. Parts may be finished by grinding or machining afterwards.
Precision profile parts avoid expensive milling of complex outlines and can be cut directly in hardened material with EDM.
Typical applications
- Cams, gears and sprockets (flat)
- Templates and gauges
- Press tool parts and strippers
- Shims and precision spacers
- Instrument and electrical parts
Suitable materials
- Tool and hardened steels
- Stainless steel
- Spring steel
- Brass, copper and aluminium
- Carbide (EDM)
Points to consider
- State which edges are functional so the right process and inspection are chosen.
- Thermal processes leave heat-affected edges; use EDM or waterjet if that matters.
- Very thin materials need support to avoid warping.
- Tolerances tighter than needed push parts onto slower processes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most accurate profile cutting method?
Wire EDM, with tolerances around ±0.005–0.01 mm and nearly sharp internal corners.
Can precision profiles be cut in hardened steel?
Yes, by wire EDM, which cuts hardened material without distortion.
How do I choose between laser, waterjet and EDM?
Laser for speed on sheet, waterjet for thick or heat-sensitive material, EDM for the highest accuracy. Share tolerances and we will recommend.
