Cutting & Profile Processes

Tube Cutting

Tube cutting cuts round, square and rectangular tube and pipe to length or profile, by sawing, abrasive cutting or tube laser. Tube laser cutting also cuts holes, slots, notches and mitres, so tubes are ready for welding without further work.

What it is

Simple lengths are sawn or cut with abrasive or orbital cutters. For profiles, a tube laser rotates the tube while cutting holes, slots, fish-mouth copes and interlocking tabs that make frames easier to assemble accurately.

Clean, accurate tube ends reduce fit-up time and improve weld quality in fabrications.

Typical applications

  • Frames, racks and furniture
  • Handrails and guard frames
  • Tube assemblies and manifolds
  • Automotive and two-wheeler parts
  • Hydraulic and process pipework

Suitable materials

  • Mild steel ERW tube and hollow sections
  • Stainless steel tube and pipe
  • Aluminium tube
  • Seamless pipe

Points to consider

  • Tube laser profiles like copes and tabs cut fabrication labour significantly.
  • State tube size, wall thickness and standard (for example IS 1161 or IS 4923).
  • Deburr inside ends for fluid-carrying tubes.
  • Share the assembly drawing so joints can be designed for easy fit-up.

Frequently asked questions

What is tube laser cutting?

A laser that rotates the tube while cutting, producing lengths plus holes, slots, notches and mitres in one operation.

Can tube ends be coped for welding?

Yes. Fish-mouth copes for tube-to-tube joints can be laser cut for accurate fit-up.

Which tube sizes can be cut?

Round, square and rectangular tubes across common sizes; share the section and wall thickness to confirm.
