Special Coatings
Special coatings are functional finishes chosen for a specific requirement, such as thermal spray coatings for wear, DLC and PVD for low friction, dry-film lubricants, anti-corrosion systems or insulating coatings. We match the coating to the part's operating conditions.
What it is
Thermal spraying (flame, arc, HVOF, plasma) deposits metals, carbides or ceramics to build up worn parts or add wear resistance. PVD and DLC coatings add thin, very hard, low-friction layers to tools and components. Dry-film lubricants and fluoropolymers reduce friction without oil.
Selection depends on the base material, temperature, wear mechanism, corrosion environment and tolerances.
Typical applications
- Pump shafts and sleeves (wear coatings)
- Cutting tools and dies (PVD)
- Sliding and anti-galling parts (DLC, dry film)
- Rebuilding worn components
- Thermal barriers and insulation
Suitable materials
- Steels and stainless steels
- Aluminium and titanium
- Tool steels and carbide
- Cast iron
Points to consider
- Describe the failure mode (wear, corrosion, galling, heat) to choose the right coating.
- PVD and DLC processes need parts that tolerate their process temperature.
- Thermal spray coatings are usually ground to final size.
- Surface preparation and masking are critical to adhesion.
Frequently asked questions
What is HVOF coating?
A thermal spray process that applies dense, hard coatings such as tungsten carbide for wear resistance and rebuilding worn parts.
What is DLC coating?
Diamond-like carbon, a very thin, hard, low-friction coating used on sliding parts and tools.
How do I choose a special coating?
Share the part, material, operating conditions and how it fails; the coating is matched to that requirement.
