Hastelloy
Hastelloy is a family of nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloys, such as C-276 and C-22, with outstanding resistance to strong acids, chlorides and mixed oxidising and reducing chemicals. It is used in chemical processing, pollution control and pharmaceutical equipment.
What it is
Hastelloy C-276 is one of the most versatile corrosion-resistant alloys, handling wet chlorine, hypochlorite, sulphuric and hydrochloric acids. C-22 offers better resistance to oxidising media, while B-series alloys excel in hydrochloric acid.
It is expensive and difficult to machine, reserved for the harshest chemical environments.
Typical applications
- Chemical reactor and vessel components
- Flue gas desulphurisation equipment
- Heat exchangers and piping
- Pharmaceutical process equipment
- Valves and pump parts for acids
Materials & grades
- Hastelloy C-276 (UNS N10276)
- Hastelloy C-22 (N06022)
- Hastelloy B-3
- Hastelloy X (high temperature)
Points to consider
- Very high material cost; minimise waste.
- Slow machining and high tool wear.
- Choose grade based on specific chemicals and concentrations.
- Certificates and PMI recommended.
Frequently asked questions
What is Hastelloy C-276 used for?
Handling highly corrosive chemicals such as wet chlorine, hypochlorite and strong acids in chemical and pollution-control plants.
Is Hastelloy better than stainless steel?
For severe chemical corrosion, far better, but it costs much more and is used only where needed.
Which Hastelloy grade should I choose?
C-276 for general severe service, C-22 for more oxidising conditions, B-3 for hydrochloric acid. Share the chemistry to confirm.
