Stainless Steel Castings
Stainless steel castings provide corrosion-resistant parts in complex shapes, typically by investment or sand casting in grades such as CF8 (304), CF8M (316) and CA15 (410). They are used for pumps, valves, food, pharma, marine and chemical equipment.
What it is
Cast stainless grades are designated differently from wrought ones: CF8 corresponds to 304, CF8M to 316, CF3/CF3M to low-carbon 304L/316L, and CA15 to 410. Duplex and precipitation-hardening (17-4 PH) cast grades are also available.
Investment casting gives the best finish and detail; sand casting suits larger parts. Castings are solution annealed where required to restore corrosion resistance.
Typical applications
- Pump casings and impellers
- Valve bodies and trim
- Food and dairy fittings
- Marine hardware
- Chemical process equipment
Suitable materials
- CF8 (304)
- CF8M (316)
- CF3 / CF3M (304L / 316L)
- CA15 (410)
- Duplex and 17-4 PH
Points to consider
- Specify the cast grade (for example CF8M) and standard.
- Solution annealing may be needed for best corrosion resistance.
- Machining stainless castings is slower; near-net casting saves cost.
- Pressure-containing parts may require radiography.
Frequently asked questions
What is CF8M?
CF8M is the cast equivalent of 316 stainless steel, with molybdenum for better corrosion resistance.
Investment or sand casting for stainless steel?
Investment casting for smaller, detailed parts with good finish; sand casting for larger parts.
Do stainless castings come with certificates?
Material test certificates and test reports can be supplied when requested.
