Machining

Complex Machined Components

Complex machined components need several operations, setups or processes, such as turning plus milling, heat treatment and grinding, to reach the final part. We plan the full route, coordinate each step between the right machines and vendors, and deliver the finished part under one order.

What it is

A complex part might be turned, then milled on a VMC, heat treated, ground on its bearing diameters and finally plated. Each step has to be sequenced correctly, with allowances left for the next operation.

The value we add is route planning and coordination: choosing where each operation is done best, controlling datums between setups, and inspecting between stages so errors are caught early.

Typical applications

  • Gear shafts and spline shafts
  • Valve bodies and manifolds
  • Machine spindles and arbors
  • Precision housings with bores on several faces
  • Assemblies of machined sub-parts

Suitable materials

  • Alloy and case-hardening steels
  • Stainless steel
  • Aluminium alloys
  • Cast iron and steel castings
  • Bronze and brass

Points to consider

  • Clear datums on the drawing keep every operation aligned.
  • State the condition at delivery (hardness, coating, finish) so allowances are planned correctly.
  • Heat treatment can distort parts; grinding stock is left on critical features.
  • A 3D model helps with complex geometry, but the 2D drawing governs tolerances.

Frequently asked questions

Can you handle parts that need many processes?

Yes. That is where we add the most value: planning the route, arranging each step with the right partner, and delivering a finished part with one point of contact.

Why do complex parts take longer to quote?

Each operation and its allowances need to be planned, sometimes across several vendors. A clear drawing with material and final condition speeds this up.

Do you inspect between operations?

Yes. Stage inspection, for example after turning and before heat treatment, catches problems before further cost is added.
