Engineering Plastics & Polymers

HDPE

HDPE (high-density polyethylene) is a tough, chemically resistant, low-cost plastic that doesn't absorb moisture. It is used for tanks, cutting boards, chemical-handling parts, liners, marine fittings and general machined or fabricated components.

What it is

HDPE resists most acids, alkalis and solvents, is food-safe in suitable grades, and is easy to weld and fabricate. Sheets can be hot-air or extrusion welded into tanks and ducts.

It is softer and has lower wear resistance than UHMWPE, but costs less and is easier to process.

Typical applications

  • Chemical tanks and trays
  • Food cutting boards and processing parts
  • Liners and splash guards
  • Marine and outdoor components
  • Pipe fittings and fabricated ducts

Materials & grades

  • HDPE sheet and rod (PE300)
  • Food-grade HDPE
  • UV-stabilised black HDPE

Points to consider

  • Low maximum temperature; not for hot applications.
  • Weldable for fabricated tanks and ducts.
  • Use UV-stabilised grades outdoors.
  • Lower wear resistance than UHMWPE.

Frequently asked questions

Is HDPE food safe?

Yes, food-grade HDPE is widely used for cutting boards and food contact parts.

What is the difference between HDPE and UHMWPE?

UHMWPE has much higher molecular weight, giving far better abrasion and impact resistance; HDPE is cheaper and easier to weld.

Can HDPE be welded?

Yes. HDPE sheets are hot-air or extrusion welded into tanks, ducts and fabrications.
