LDPE

LDPE (low-density polyethylene) is a soft, flexible, chemically resistant plastic used where flexibility and toughness matter more than stiffness. It is found in films, tubing, flexible covers, liners and squeeze parts.

What it is

LDPE has a branched molecular structure that makes it flexible, translucent and impact resistant even at low temperatures. It resists water and many chemicals and is food-safe in suitable grades.

It is mainly moulded or extruded; machined LDPE parts are less common because of its softness.

Typical applications

  • Flexible tubing and hoses
  • Protective covers and caps
  • Films and liners
  • Squeeze bottles and containers
  • Gaskets and flexible spacers

Materials & grades

  • LDPE sheet and film
  • LDPE tubing
  • Food-grade LDPE

Points to consider

  • Low stiffness and temperature limit; not for structural parts.
  • Good for flexible, chemical-resistant covers and liners.
  • Difficult to bond or print without treatment.
  • Choose HDPE where more stiffness is needed.

Frequently asked questions

What is LDPE used for?

Flexible products such as tubing, covers, films, liners and squeeze containers.

What is the difference between LDPE and HDPE?

LDPE is softer and more flexible; HDPE is stiffer, stronger and more heat resistant.

Is LDPE chemical resistant?

Yes, to water and many acids, alkalis and alcohols, though some solvents attack it.
