PA66

PA66 (Nylon 6/6) is a stronger, stiffer and more heat-resistant nylon than PA6, with better wear resistance at higher loads and temperatures. It is used for gears, bearings, structural and electrical parts.

What it is

PA66 has a higher melting point (about 260 °C) and crystallinity than PA6, giving higher strength, stiffness and creep resistance, and slightly lower moisture absorption.

It machines well into precision parts and is widely used in glass-filled form for injection-moulded automotive and electrical components.

Typical applications

  • Gears and bearings under higher load
  • Electrical insulators and connectors
  • Structural brackets
  • Automotive components
  • Wear strips at higher temperature

Materials & grades

  • Unfilled PA66
  • Glass-filled PA66 (GF30)
  • Heat-stabilised grades
  • Lubricated grades

Points to consider

  • Slightly more brittle than PA6 when dry; toughness improves with moisture.
  • Glass-filled grades give stiffness but are more abrasive to mating parts.
  • Allow for moisture-related dimensional change.
  • Good choice for higher operating temperatures than PA6.

Frequently asked questions

Why choose PA66 over PA6?

For higher stiffness, strength and temperature resistance, with somewhat lower moisture absorption.

Is PA66 used for gears?

Yes. PA66 is widely used for gears and bearings, including glass-filled grades for stiffness.

What temperature can PA66 handle?

Continuous use around 90–110 °C, with short-term peaks higher.
