Engineering Plastics & Polymers

PPS

PPS (polyphenylene sulphide) is a high-temperature engineering plastic with excellent chemical resistance, dimensional stability and inherent flame retardance, used continuously up to about 220 °C. It suits pump parts, valve components, electrical parts and hot-water applications.

What it is

PPS resists almost all solvents below 200 °C, hot water and steam, and holds tight tolerances with low moisture uptake. It is usually glass- or mineral-filled for stiffness; bearing grades add PTFE and carbon.

It offers much of PEEK's performance at lower cost for many chemical and thermal applications.

Typical applications

  • Pump and valve components
  • Electrical and electronic parts
  • Automotive under-bonnet parts
  • Hot-water and steam components
  • Chemical process equipment

Materials & grades

  • Unfilled PPS
  • Glass-filled PPS (GF40)
  • Bearing-grade PPS

Points to consider

  • Unfilled PPS is fairly brittle; filled grades are common.
  • A cost-effective alternative to PEEK in many chemical uses.
  • Excellent dimensional stability for precision parts.
  • Machining filled grades wears tools.

Frequently asked questions

What is PPS plastic used for?

Pump and valve parts, electrical components and hot chemical or steam applications.

Is PPS cheaper than PEEK?

Yes, generally, and it offers similar chemical resistance at somewhat lower temperatures.

What temperature can PPS handle?

Continuous use up to about 220 °C, with short-term exposure higher, making it a practical step below PEEK.
