PA6

PA6 (Nylon 6) is the most widely used nylon grade, offering a good balance of toughness, impact strength, wear resistance and machinability at moderate cost. It is used for bushes, rollers, gears and general machined plastic parts.

What it is

PA6 is slightly softer and tougher than PA66, with better impact resistance and surface finish when machined. It is available extruded or as cast nylon (PA6G), which has higher crystallinity and less stress for large parts.

Like all nylons, it absorbs moisture, gaining toughness but changing size slightly.

Typical applications

  • Bushes and wear pads
  • Rollers and wheels
  • Gears and cams
  • Guide rails and slides
  • Machined insulating parts

Materials & grades

  • Extruded PA6
  • Cast PA6 (PA6G)
  • Oil-filled PA6
  • Heat-stabilised grades

Points to consider

  • Choose PA66 where higher stiffness and temperature resistance are needed.
  • Allow for moisture absorption in tight fits.
  • Cast PA6 is preferred for thick or large components.
  • Colour options include natural, black and blue (cast).

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between PA6 and PA66?

PA66 is stiffer, stronger and handles higher temperature; PA6 is tougher, more impact resistant and slightly easier to machine.

Is PA6 good for bushes?

Yes. PA6, especially oil-filled grades, makes good low-cost bushes for moderate loads and speeds.

Can PA6 be used outdoors?

Yes, black UV-stabilised grades are better outdoors; natural grades can yellow over time.
