Rulon
Rulon is a family of PTFE-based bearing compounds (a trade name) with fillers that give very low friction, good wear resistance and dry-running capability. Rulon-type materials are used for bushes, thrust washers, seals and slide pads, especially where lubrication is impossible.
What it is
Pure PTFE is extremely slippery but wears and creeps easily. Rulon-type compounds add proprietary fillers that dramatically improve wear and creep resistance while keeping low friction. Different grades suit different mating surfaces, loads and environments, including food contact.
We supply genuine Rulon or equivalent filled-PTFE bearing grades as specified, machined to drawing or as stock shapes.
Typical applications
- Dry-running bushes and bearings
- Thrust washers and wear rings
- Slide pads and guides
- Food and packaging machinery bearings
- Seal and valve components
Materials & grades
- Rulon grades (e.g. LR, J, 641) or equivalents
- Glass-, carbon- and bronze-filled PTFE alternatives
Points to consider
- Grade selection depends on mating surface hardness (some grades suit soft stainless or aluminium).
- Allow for thermal expansion, which is high for PTFE compounds.
- Specify genuine brand or accept equivalents; costs differ significantly.
- Press-fit bushes need correct interference to prevent spinning.
Frequently asked questions
What is Rulon?
A trade name for a family of filled PTFE compounds designed for low-friction, wear-resistant, dry-running bearings.
Can Rulon run without lubrication?
Yes. Dry running is one of its main advantages over metal and many plastic bearings.
Are there alternatives to Rulon?
Yes. Filled PTFE grades (glass, carbon, bronze, polyimide) offer similar properties; we can advise equivalents.
