UHMWPE

UHMWPE (ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene) has exceptional abrasion resistance, very low friction, high impact strength and no moisture absorption. It is used for wear liners, chute and hopper linings, guide rails, star wheels and conveyor components.

What it is

Its extremely long polymer chains give abrasion resistance better than many metals, and a slippery, non-stick surface that bulk materials slide off easily. It stays tough even at very low temperatures.

UHMWPE cannot be injection moulded easily, so it is supplied as compression-moulded sheets and rods and machined into parts.

Typical applications

  • Chute, hopper and truck-bed liners
  • Conveyor wear strips and guide rails
  • Star wheels and timing screws
  • Food processing parts
  • Dock fenders and impact pads

Materials & grades

  • Virgin UHMWPE (PE1000)
  • Reprocessed UHMWPE
  • Filled/antistatic grades
  • Food-grade UHMWPE

Points to consider

  • Low maximum temperature (around 80 °C).
  • High thermal expansion; slot fixing holes on long liners.
  • Low stiffness; needs support under load.
  • Hard to bond; use countersunk bolts for liners.

Frequently asked questions

What is UHMWPE used for?

Wear liners, conveyor guides, star wheels and parts where abrasion resistance and low friction matter.

Is UHMWPE better than nylon for wear?

In sliding abrasion and impact, usually yes, and it doesn't absorb moisture. Nylon is stiffer and handles higher temperature.

What is PE1000?

A common designation for UHMWPE, referring to its very high molecular weight.
